Pashca West is in a bind.
Calls for help are pouring in to the emergency medical dispatcher — a heart attack, a seizure, a diabetic emergency, a car crash — and ambulance crews are not answering their radios.
West presses a button and makes another plea over the radio: “Medic 1, and Ambulance 26, are you ready for service? Medic 1, Ambulance 26, Ambulance 30, Ambulance 15 also, are you ready for service?”
She looks up over her computer screen and shakes her head. “Those are units in the hospital that are supposed to be coming out, but they’re not coming out.”
